Open Sourced Business Intelligence
Open Source has acquired a significant amount of market share within the application server, database and operating systems markets. Companies like Red Hat, Novell, MySQL and JBOSS are building business models around open sourced software. Is Business Intelligence the next stop?
Recently, two startup companies announced their openware for reporting and data-analysis, while a business intelligence heavyweight claimed it will begin shipping with the MySQL open-source database.
Greenplum Corp. launched the beta version of the DeepGreen open-source data-warehousing software based on the PostgreSQL open-source database. DeepGreen, aimed at departmental and data-mart business-intelligence apps, is free; Greenplum anticipates selling services to support the product. Greenplum also announced that it is developing a high-end data-warehousing product called DeepGreen MPP, which will be released later this summer. The company also provided details relative to the the Bizgres project to enhance PostgreSQL for business-intelligence applications.
JasperSoft Inc. unveiled its JasperReports open-source report-writing software. Throwing down the gauntlet the market leaders such as Business Objects. The company also debuted its proprietary JasperDecisions report-aggregation portal software.
Business Objects also announced an agreement with MySQL AB to embed the open-source MySQL database into its BusinessObjects XI software.
Open source initiatives have often focused on mature, commoditized software sectors. It is only a matter of time before enterprise qaulity, open sources business intelligence products begin to rob market share from industry leaders.
